9 Inspirational Sir Ranulph Fiennes Quotes

Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE – the man the Guinness Book of World Records dubbed the ‘world’s greatest living explorer’ – is living proof that neither heart problems nor age are insurmountable barriers to achieving feats of profound endurance.

A former smoker who overcame a heart attack to mount expeditions across Antarctica Fiennes is one of the very special keynotes at this year’s IFSEC International.

Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet, OBE was born 7 March 1944. After failing his A-levels at Eton, he served in the British Army for eight years before setting out on numerous record-breaking expeditions in the world’s most inhospitable environments.

He was the first person to visit both the North and South Poles by surface means and the first person to cross the Antarctic continent on foot. He circumnavigated the world along its polar axis – a three-year, 52,000 mile expedition that has yet to be matched by anyone else.

Sir Ranulph famously hacked off his own frostbitten fingers with a power tool, discovered the lost city of Ubar and in 2009 he reached the peak of Everest at the age of 65. Now 71 he is still plotting adventures that would terrify those of us who are half his age.

Sir Ranulph is also a prolific charity fundraiser, having raised over £14m for various UK charities. He has run seven marathons on seven consecutive days in seven continents after having a heart attack.

As a teaser for what to expect when Sir Ranulph hits the stage at IFSEC on 17 June, here are some of Sir Ranulph’s inspirational quotations. Make sure you claim your free ticket here.

1. There is no such thing as bad weather

“There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.”

2. No one will pay your way for you

“No one will pay you for planning an expedition at first: you have to work in pubs at weekends so you can pay the gas bills. I joined the Territorial Army, which paid me when I turned up to drill nights, and so did my wife.”

3. Accidents can happen wherever you are

“When I sawed the end of my finger off it was in a garden shed on Exmore and my wife was bringing me cups of tea.”

4. Just keep going, whatever happens

“There is of course never any point in crying over split milk – the key is to learn from failures and then to keep going”

5. We may well crack up along the way

“The conditions we will face may be nightmarish, they may from time to time be show-stoppers. Steel and rubber may crack up. So may some of us.”

6. Motivation comes from within

“I am doing this for many reasons, some of which I don’t fully understand. That there is an inner urge is undeniable.”

7. Rivalry is a driver for success

“Rivalry is one of the factors pushing me. While my back was turned, the Norwegians managed to achieve the first Arctic crossing in winter. I didn’t want the same to happen in the Antarctic.”

8. Expeditions pay the bills

“I go on expeditions for the same reason an estate agent sells houses – to pay the bills.”

9. The British aren’t so weary after all

“The British aren’t so weary as they’re sometimes said to be. The Transglobe Expedition, seven years in the planning, is scheduled to leave Greenwich, England, tomorrow on a journey of such daring that it makes one wonder how the sun ever set on the empire.”
Sir Ranulph Fiennes interviewed by the New York Times in 1979
