Crime Slashed by 50% Across 10 Industrial Estates Thanks to Axis-Milestone Solution

Axis announced cutting-edge technologies: from Zipstream compression technology to Network Cameras which help reduce crime by 50 per cent.

Atul Rajput – Axis Communications

During an informative media briefing at IFSEC international, Axis regional director Atul Rajput and product manager Joacim Tullberg illustrated a host of new technologies and company developments.

Following the recent takeover by Canon they said that Axis would remain a separate, distinct entity within the Canon group.

“Axis access to Canon’s knowledge and technology will be a foundation for future joint cooperation and benefits,” Rajput said. “The areas include image technology, manufacturing technology, procurement power, strong patent portfolio.”

Crime slashed

Axis partner Boston Networks proposed a solution to Scotland’s Clacksfirst Ltd, which was looking for a cost effective security system to help provide a safe and secure business environment for more than 200 firms based in 10 business parks and industrial estates.

Despite Clacksfirst receiving responses from six firms including IP video integration company, all tender respondents offered a traditional ANPR system.

Boston Networks proposed a system that could not only collect number plates, but also identify the type of vehicle, even picking out vehicle signage 24 hours a day. Using AXIS P1354 Network Cameras, it was also possible to identify people inside vehicles and pedestrians entering and leaving the parks on foot.

The Axis camera were configured in day/night mode. In addition to this, Milestone XProtect Professional video management software was used to record, manage and distribute video recordings rapidly in case of incidents.

The result was a 50% reduction in crime across all business parks in the BID since it began managing them.

Besides, Axis cameras provide high quality HDTV images enabling positive identification of all individuals in the crowd at Turf Moor Stadium during a home match for Burnley FC.

The Axis cameras were chosen for their ability to deliver razor-sharp images using 18x optical zoom capability even if located at the opposite end of the pitch over 120 meters away.

“It is important to underline that at these distances this camera can provide images capable of positive identification and help the club’s ground safety team spot issues before they escalate,” Tullberg said.

Sustainability

Axis priorities sustainability more than most companies. “Our company shall be recognized as an industry leader in contributing to a smarter, safer and sustainable development throughout the value chain,” said Joacim Tullberg.

The green choice reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 13% in 2014 and 96% of suppliers approved via an Axis audit. In addition to this, many hazardous materials have been phased out.

Zipstream compression tech

A new compression technology which reduces storage requirements by an average 50% or more in video surveillance applications, Axis’ Zipstream technology is fully compatible with the H.264 compression standard.

It can be also used with the latest Axis cameras and the market’s leading video management software without additional investment. It is necessary to underline that it is a radically more efficient H.264 implementation, lowering bandwidth.

“Significant progress towards better image quality with higher HDTV resolutions and increased low-light performance has also increased the requirements on the network storage infrastructure,” chief technology officer Johan Paulsson, said.

“With Axis’ Zipstream technology we enable our customers to drastically reduce bandwidth and storage needs without compromising on image details”.

More than twice the amount of video footage can now be stored on SD cards or NAS’ in small systems built on AXIS Camera Companion as well as other edge recording applications.

Surveillance trends

There are four trends, said Rajput: optimized image quality for surveillance; video surveillance as-a-service; analytics and video compression.

The demand for real-time incident detection, a survey on video surveillance in public transport – led by UITP in May 2015 – revealed almost 50% of respondents expressed interest in analytics.

But the majority of responders reported that video surveillance represents a cross-functional tool – a clear trend toward Real-Time Incident Detection.

“To understand the value of audio analytics under utilisation, you can think about a physical attack at the station and in such circumstances, you can hear it as a deterrent,” Rajput added.

In Atul Rajput’s popular Top Ten Surveillance Trends 2015 there are several predictions:

  • Each surveillance installation is unique. Customers remain willing to pay a premium for the best solution
  • Manufacturers continue to innovate to differentiate (Services and embedded analytics)
  • Peace of mind: Larger installs still place great emphasis on brand recognition and pay a premium for a trusted brand
  • Standardisation – still much work to do with full compatibility for WDR, low light, image stabilisation and bandwidth optimisation.
