FFE’s New Explosion-Proof Optical Beam Smoke Detector for Oil Rigs and Refineries

FIREX exhibitor FFE is launching an ATEX-certified, explosion-proof optical beam smoke detector – the Fireray 3000 Exd – in the Middle East and Asia.

The product: Designed to protect wide areas against smoking fires in potentially explosive environments the Fireray 3000 Exd is ideal for use in large enclosures, providing an early warning of smouldering or highly smoke-generative fires overlooked by flame detectors.

Fireray 3000 Exd boasts unique Light Cancellation Technology (LCT). Monitoring ambient light levels on the detector and discounting them from the ‘real’ signal, the LCT means the detector can operate under challenging light conditions – for example created by sunlight, sodium lamps and fluorescent lighting.

Features an infrared transmitter and receiver with separate, wall-mounted control unit. Installed in a safe area this unit can be adjusted and tested from a convenient non-hazardous location.

The transmitter head emits a narrow beam of infrared light to the receiver head. When smoke obscures the infrared beam the receiver’s signal strength falls – triggering an alarm when it drops below a pre-set level.

Verticals/sectors: Suited to oil rigs, refineries, ordnance stores and similar premises.

Key features:

  • Protects wide areas up to 1,500m2
  • ATEX-approved and Exd certified receiver and transmitter
  • Two detectors per system controller
  • Separate fire and fault relays per detector
  • 10-100m range (1,500m2)
  • Laser and LEDs for rapid alignment
  • Low level control unit with LCD display (for safe area)
  • Programmable sensitivity and fire/fault delay
  • Contamination compensation
  • Patented and award-winning Light Cancellation Technology
  • FFE says its intuitive user interface means Fireray 3000 Exd is easy to install and use, even by a single operator. Laser-assisted alignment method, which is activated at the controller, combined with alignment LEDs, offers visual feedback while setting up.

FFE says: “We are excited to be bringing this technology to market,” says FFE managing director Mark Osborne. “It’s a major addition to our Fireray range”.

About FFE:

FFE supplies specialist detection products to the fire industry. Headquartered in Hertfordshire, the company has offices in the US, Dubai, India and China. More than half a million units of its Fireray optical beam smoke detector have been installed around the world.

The company’s other flagship product is the Talentum flame detector, which is being protecting a supersonic car that will appear at FIREX. A full-sized replica of the Bloodhound, which has been built with the goal of breaking the world land-speed record, will be on FFE’s stand at the show.

FFE also develops fire extinguishers for aviation use and vibration switches for industrial applications.

To find out more about the Fireray 3000 Exd, visit FIREX International 2016 between 21-23 June at London’s ExCeL. Register here and then book a meeting with the FFE team to take place during the event (stand number E180).
