Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

Fire and Security Industries Still not Collaborating Enough, says Siemens Marketing Director

Tony O Brien SiemensThe head of enterprise solutions of Siemens Building technology has called for an integration of the ‘silos’ that separate the electronic security and fire safety markets.

In a talk on Wednesday at IFSEC International, Tony O’Brien said that industry conditioning encouraged the electronic security and fire safety industries to compete against each other.

The talk, which took place in the Smart Buildings Theatre in the ExCel Centre, brought in the highest number of delegates the IFSEC venue had seen.

O’Brien acknowledged that many people at IFSEC and FIREX were speaking about Smart Buildings, but the different industries were not making enough effort to collaborate to meet customers’ demands.

O’Brien said: “The argument the industry takes is that each of the silos are so strong in themselves, that they never want to go outside their domain and integrate with other markets.”

“I think a lot of it is to do with industry conditioning. As the industries have always had their way of independently doing things, when someone comes along and challenges the tradition, there is a tendency to want to protect it.”

Along with suggesting that the industries combine together, O’Brien called for more efficient use of human resources. “Most of the issues come from people and processes. The technology’s great, but often it only designed for one market, when the customer may want something which fulfills other needs.”

“The standards we go by have been mainly from the industry and not from the customer. For example, yesterday, a customer came to me and said ‘I’m not interested in buying three separate devices, I want to buy one that covers all my needs. But I’m really struggling to find where in the industry and can get this.’”
