First-Ever Smartphone With Integrated Thermal Camera: The Cat S60 Explained in 45 seconds

Interviewed at FIREX 2016 Roy Taylor of the Bullitt Group pitches the Cat S60 rugged smartphone with built-in thermal camera in just 45 seconds.

The Cat S60 is a ruggedized smartphone with an embedded Lepton thermal microcamera module from FLIR – also a FIREX exhibitor – that visualises heat that is invisible to the naked eye and temperature contrasts.

Users can operate the camera from the MyFLIR thermal camera Android app.

Thermal camera features

• Capture still thermal images, video, panoramas, and time lapses
• Images and videos are enhanced with FLIR’s multi-spectral dynamic imaging technology (MSX) that embosses digital camera image data onto the thermal image to provide context and clarity
• Swipe between thermal and the corresponding visual spectrum saved images, making it easier tounderstand the thermal image
• Apply up to three movable spot metres and a fixed region of interest to read temperature data directly off the live image feed or from saved images
• Switch between nine thermal colour palettes that visualise surface temperature contrasts differently, including modes to highlight the highest and lowest temperature areas in the frame only
• Select from four pre-set emissivity values and set custom temperature scales for thermal images
• Export radiometric JPEG images to apps including FLIR Tools, available for free, which offers additional image editing and analysis tools, temperature visualisations, and PDF reporting
• Can spot heat sources up to 100ft away, as well as seeing through obscurants like smoke.

Cat phones believe the S60 will help a wide range of industries in tasks such as on-the-job report generation and email integration. Incorporating all the capabilities one expects of a regular high-end smartphone, the S60 will be marketed to building professionals, utility workers, emergency first responders and gadget lovers, among other customers.

An SDK (software development kit) will be launched soon, giving developers scope for creating apps for the S60 and its thermal camera.
