First Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility in 100 Years Awards Contract to Advanced and CDS Security & Fire

advanced railHitachi Rail Europe has specified MxPro multiprotocol fire panels from Advanced to protect its new manufacturing facility in County Durham.

The first rail vehicle manufacturing plant built in the UK for more than 100 years the Newton Aycliffe facility will create around 730 jobs as well as custom for the Northumberland-based fire-safety firm.

CDS Security and Fire has been awarded the contract to install both fire and security systems at the site.

Advanced’s benchmark MxPro 4 fire panel range will cover all areas of the new facility with 942 components in total, including more than 200 smoke detectors, 150 sounder beacons and an aspirating system. The MxPro 4 panels at the site will be connected with a high speed, fault-tolerant network, interfaced with a PC-based graphical control system and supported by Apollo devices.

“We use Advanced panels in almost all of our installations where bespoke solutions are required and we knew that the MxPro panels would be suitable for the installation at Hitachi, providing up to date fire safety for the new plant,” says Rosie Abbott, spokesperson for CDS Security and Fire.

CDS Security and Fire covers the entire North East region and works directly with end users, main contractors, architects, electrical consultants and facilities management companies .

The new facility will initially construct new InterCity Express trains for the Great Western Main Line and the East Coast Main Line in a mammoth order worth £5.7bn, with 27.5 years’ of ongoing train maintenance built into the contract.

The Hitachi facility is located at Merchant Park in Newton Aycliffe as part of a development undertaken by Merchant Place Developments Ltd.

Neil Parkin, sales manager for Advanced, says: “We’re delighted that Advanced fire systems have been specified on such a high profile project. Hitachi is investing millions in the plant and it’s important that the staff, the technology and the factory itself benefit from the latest fire systems, offering the potential for future upgrades and expansion.

“We believe that MxPro ticks all the boxes, combining proven reliability with innovation and ease-of-use. It delivers a future-proof solution, with the promise that it can be easily upgraded and supplemented in future.”

MxPro is available in two panel ranges with a choice of four detector protocols and open installer network with free training and support. MxPro panels can be used in single loop, single panel format or configured into multi-loop, 200 panel networks covering wide areas and thousands of field devices.

MxPro 4 is fully compliant with EN54 Parts 2 and 4, while the MxPro 5 – the company’s highest performance analogue panel – is EN54 2,4 and 13 approved and backward compatible with MxPro 4.
