Grundig Launches 4k Surveillance Camera Range as Sony’s 4K Model Arrives in Europe

A year on since the first raft of 4K cameras emerged, competition is about to intensify as Grundig launches a ultra-HD range while Sony brings its own 4K model to Europe.

Grundig is initially releasing box, bullet and fixed dome camera options for both day and night surveillance. All three models boast a 1/1.7” CMOS sensor, with Ambarella S2 DSP, Delivering 3840 x 2160 pixel, 8MP resolution images.

“4K provides exceptional scene coverage, clarity and detail, capturing everything in view,” said Andreas Kronwald, product manager at the German manufacturer. “With four times the resolution of 2MP, full HD cameras, 4K cameras miss nothing.

“They may cost more than 2MP cameras, but fewer are needed for site coverage, saving in cabling, configuration, recording channels, VMS software licenses and more.

“If an incident occurs, users can eZoom into the scene for even greater detail, in both live or playback mode. This makes 4K cameras extremely effective for forensic searching, frequently used by video management software (VMS) and video analytics systems.”

Grundig’s 4Kcameras offer both landscape or corridor formats, making them suitable for aisles, corridors, tunnels and platforms. The bullet and fixed dome camera options are IP66-weatherproof rated, while the fixed dome is IK10 vandal-resistant rated. A motorised, 3.5 to 8mm vari-focal zoom lens  promises sharp images and remote, optical zoom offers flexibility.

P-Iris (‘precise iris’) technology boosts image contrast, clarity, resolution and depth of field, says Grundig. Low light sensitivity comes in at a more than respectable 0.005 Lux in black and white modes, while IR illumination operates in total darkness, with a 50m range. All cameras can function in temperatures down to -25°C.

The box camera is for indoor use and fits a wide range of MP lenses.

Sony’s 4K model, meanwhile, will become available in Europe from October. Pitched by the electronics giant as offering both high resolution and low-light sensitivity  at a competitive price point the SNC-VM772R also boasts bandwidth optimisation features and intelligent scene capture function.

“4K is soon to be a video security standard,” said Damien Weissenburger, business head of corporate & education solutions at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. “But 4K imaging is about more than just increased resolution. It’s also expanding the application potential of security cameras and helping to transform security and surveillance.

“The increased resolution of Sony’s 4K video security camera covers a larger area, improves situational awareness and ensures nothing is missed – all benefits the market has been crying out for. We’ve already received substantial interest in the SNC-VM772R across Europe and the product promises to be a real game changer for the market as customers unlock the true value of 4K imaging.”

Fiegl + Spielberger, an Austrian security services company, is Sony’s first customer for the SNC-VM772R, deploying the cameras for surveillance of a large bakery.

“Innovation like 4K camera technology is essential when it comes to meeting the growing demands of our customers,” said Bernhard Bachofner, managing partner at Fiegl & Spielberger Solution GmbH.

“From our point of view, the biggest advantages of the new camera are its innovative features. When combined with the higher resolution, they open up a host of new opportunities in large-scale surveillance”.
