HD CCTV Cameras Still Only Account for 2% of Globally Installed Base

245 million active Installed cameras in 2014 IHS StudyThe number of installed video surveillance cameras installed and operational globally reached the 245 million mark in 2014, figures from IHS have revealed.

Of the total number of installed, a majority were analogue and about 20% are estimated to be network cameras. Only about 2% are HD CCTV cameras, despite the launch of countless models in recent years.

The first time IHS has measured the installed base of security cameras the study was carried out based on unit shipment data from the last 10 years. The shelf life of cameras in each sub-region was also analysed by the research firm, which specialises in the security industry alongside several other areas.

Asia’s installed security cameras capacity in 2014 had reached 65%, projected to rise to 68% by 2016, driven mainly by shipment unit growth in China.

Demand in China is kept high by low prices, therefore causing a high replacement rate for faulty cameras. Higher price points in North America and Europe drives a focus on product reliability over price.

Chinese manufacturer Hikvision emerged as the company with largest number of security cameras installed worldwide in 2013, followed by South Korean giant Samsung Techwin. Despite some consolidation the market remained highly fragmented, with the top 10 camera vendors together accounting for just 40% of all installed cameras.

In the network cameras category Axis Communication had the largest installed capacity in 2013, followed by Hikvision. The two companies were the only ones to each account for more than 10% of the installed base.

“Only about 2% are high-definition CCTV cameras, despite the launch of countless HD models in recent years”

Are you sure you are not confusing the HDcctv category with all HD cameras? Are you not counting any of the HD IP cameras out there?
