The Union Home Ministry has approved a proposal for the creation of ‘cyber-security architecture’ within the Intelligence Bureau (IB) which will work as an independent body and won’t be subordinate to the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).
The NTRO directly receives orders from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The newly constituted wing will work under IB and is going to have the combined workforce of no less than 500 officials and is going to be headed by an officer of the joint director rank. Sources confirmed that the home ministry has decided upon the requirement based on the internal analysis and due to the rising incidents of young men falling prey to radicalisation attempts online.
“IB has a separate wing for cyber security but the creation of a full-fledged wing is required to tackle loopholes,” said a senior government official.
“In the past, we have seen that cyberspace was used to recruit young people to join terrorist outfits like IS. The threat emanating from this medium is imminent and we require a dedicated team to crackdown on it.”
The home minister had earlier this year remarked that cyber security is turning into a “big challenge” while informing Parliament that an expert committee has been set up to recommend ways in which the menace could be controlled. The said committee was scheduled to submit report by May 2015 but has, instead, sought an extension.
