Home Ministry Requests Extra Funding for India’s 100 Smart Cities With Drones Now Part of the Vision

India Home Minister to Propose for Clubbing Smart Cities

The flagship government programme develop 100 smart cities in India will soon be updated at the behest of Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

To realise the vision, the Home Ministry will send a proposal to the Urban Development Ministry urging an outlay of Rs 48000 cr to be invested with the smart cities project. The move has been planned by the Home Ministry to upgrade the city infrastructure to enhance preparedness for mitigating terrorism related vulnerabilities.

As only seven cities are part of the smart cities project presently that includes Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, the Home Ministry plans to bring all 100 cities part of the smart city project under its ambit.

Key security related upgrades part o that aref the Home Ministry’s safe city project include:

– Installing CCTV systems in public places to aid policing in megacities

– Setting up a command control centre similar to the US-based Fusion Centre to monitor and issue alerts based on live feeds generated by CCTV

-An emergency calling system based on Dial 100 model and GPS-based responsiveness from patrolling cars

-Aerial surveillance of cities using unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters

Soft skills training, community policing, behavioural training for police personnel and extending women representation in police forces are also on the cards.
