In this Q&A Dr Moores, who recently appeared in an IFSEC Global interview, reflects on his recent visit to Singapore, which has made significant progress on incorporating smart technologies into its security infrastructure.
IFSEC Global: How was your recent visit to Singapore? Did you feel like you were in a ‘smart city’?
SM: What struck me about Singapore was the sense that everything has ‘Smart Potential’ in one form or another and the enthusiasm that surrounded the adoption of new technologies.
IG: What was the most interesting smart technology you saw?
SM: For me, at least, it was finding Apple iPad minis on lying tables in a Japanese restaurant in a big shopping mall food level. Sit down, choose your menu and the waitress delivers it minutes later. Very ‘Blade Runner’ movie-like!
IG: Can you give us examples of anything particularly innovative Singapore are doing when it comes to IoT and security?
SM: Singapore is the world’s largest shipping hub and there’s a great deal of effort and imagination being applied to every facet of this supply chain. But with this, there is a growing concern over end-to-end security across all devices and this remains a huge infrastructure challenge.
IG: What can London learn from Singapore when it comes to technology, security and the whole smart city concept?
SM: London is already moving rapidly in a smart direction but what I believe it needs is a fully joined-up policy, supported by an open, powerful communications infrastructure and here it can learn lessons from similar cities like New York and the imagination being shown in the Far-east.
IG: How will your recent trips influence your upcoming presentation at IFSEC?
SM: I’m in fact coming direct to IFSEC from another conference in Hong Kong and so I’m very much hoping that the long flight from another aspiring smart city, will conjure-up some new ideas to think about in London.
