For anyone that missed the chance to check out the innovation at London’s ExCeL, or indeed for anyone seeking a reminder about its attributes as a fire-safety product, Olga Katsanova, product manager of chemicals for Northern Europe at Hilti Ltd, answered some questions about a product that was spotlighted on FIREX’s Innovation Trail.
IFSEC Global: Can you please tell me a bit about the product and what it does?
The new Hilti CFS-CC Firestop cable collar is a fast, easy-to-install and safe solution for fire-stopping a wide variety of electrical applications (new or existing): cables, cable bundles, conduits and conduit bundles. Firestopping has never been easier for small and irregular electrical openings in fire rated walls and floors.
IG: How is it innovative?
What does it do that no other product does? Firestop cable collar has a unique design, which comprises metal housing and a pre-formed flexible intumescent inlay with a slot in the middle, which allows fast and easy installation. It is a surface mounted firestop solution which is ideal for cases where there is no space to fit firestop within the wall – eliminating the need for chiselling or framing the opening – all of which saves time, materials and money.
Furthermore, additional cables can be fitted through the device at a later date. Finally, it is a perfect problem solver in case of cables which are running along the wall or in different directions, as well as cables close to the edge, simply remove by segments or using half of the device.
Why did the company feel there was a need in the market for such a product? We see many cases where existing firestopping is breached by the addition of new cables through existing seals or cases where new penetrations are created and not firestopped at all or not firestopped correctly.
We have therefore developed a solution that would allow to re-instate the integrity of the fire-rated walls and floors by retro-fitting the device over the problem opening without the need to prepare the opening. As long as the cable collar can cover the opening and the cable bundle can fit inside it, the installer has the peace of mind that it will perform its function.
IG: Which kind of customers will be interested in this product?
This products is ideal for firestop installers, but even more so for anyone responsible for maintaining existing fire compartmentation in buildings. Cable collar offers an easy-to-use solution, even for the less experienced installer.
What are your plans or expectations for FIREX? At FIREX International 2015 will have our full range of firestop products on display, as well as showcasing of our new products such as Firestop Cable Collar CFS-CC and Firestop Collar Endless CFS-C EL.
