Councillors in a Welsh town were recently perplexed when the quality of CCTV footage deteriorated, making it difficult to identify wrongdoers.
Upon investigation it was discovered that spider cobwebs had been obscuring the view of CCTV camera lenses in the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, which sits within Snowdonia National Park.
The issue of unclear CCTV footage had been raised with councillors at a recent meeting of the Blaenau Ffestiniog Town Council.
The responsibility for periodically checking whether the problem has recurred has now been entrusted to the town clerk, who is tasked with conducted checks once a week.
However, a spokeswoman for North Wales Police suggested the problem was yet to compromise a police investigation: “The CCTV cameras have assisted the police considerably during a number of investigations, and have assisted in convictions. There have been no reported incidents that the images obtained could not be used due to a spider/spider’s web or any other insect or obstruction.”
