Installers Urged to Comply With BS7671 Amendment on Falling Cables

Installers have been reminded about the importance of meeting new regulatory requirements stipulating that escapes routes must be protected from the risk of falling cables in the event of a fire.

Coming into came into force earlier this year BS7671 amendment 3 highlights the danger of fallen or falling cables blocking escapes routes for those escaping or fighting a fire.

SWA, which supplies cable terminations, fastenings, fixings and tools for the electrical and construction industry, has highlighted the amendment in its efforts to market fire safety clips.

Tested and approved to BS 5839-1 the clips “are the safest way to fix fire resistant cables inside plastic cable trunking”, says the Gloucestershire-based company. The fold-over tabs are quick and easy to attach, it also claims.

Each zinc plated clip can accommodate 2×1.5mm 2-core fire performance cables and are suitable for 25x16mm trunking. Supplied in packs of 50 the clips can withstand heat up to a melting point of more than 1000ºC.

We can all hope that ‘so-called’ competent persons will follow the British standards for their sector. However, as we still see plenty of fire alarm cable not correctly installed over 10 years after it became a full requirement, I shall not be holding my breath. Using the word ‘regulatory’ change is also misleading, as no law or regulation has been altered. BS 7671 is a code of practice and has the same status as BS 5839, which is also widely flouted by designers, installers and service ‘engineers’! It also does not help with the hundreds of thousands of existing installations… Read more »
