Lucknow to Install 5,000 Surveillance Cameras to Monitor Street Crime

Lucknow – also known as ‘The City of Nawabs’ – will soon be covered by 9,000 CCTV cameras as the provincial government  attempts to tackle street crime.

There are two parallel security projects in the city: one for monitoring street crimes and the other centred on traffic surveillance.

Currently, the city has 4,000 surveillance cameras around the city and the district administration is planning to install 5,000 more in the next one and half months.

Under the Traffic Surveillance Project 300 PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) cameras have already  been installed, each costing approximately rupees one lakh.

Lucknow police and district administration is also using drone cameras, notably during Republic Day.

However, the the police are planning to extend the use of drones beyond such special occasions to daily monitoring of urban streets.

The city’s hospitals and offices in the city are already well covered by surveillance cameras.

The police department intends to consolidate all CCTV feeds into a centralised control room in Gomti nagar.

Various signs have been erected around the city warning citizens that ‘you are on camera’.
