The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) is planning to introduce RFID across the country for all vehicle categories by 2018.

Authorities are planning to embed a smart code tag inside the road tax sticker that can be tracked by satellites.

The vehicle tracking system will not only help police and other law enforcement bodies in tracking down criminals but is also going to prove useful for the Works Ministry and Malaysian Highway Authority’s (LLM) in their plans for a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) for electronic payment implementation, which would eliminateexisting toll plazas.

Through RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology Malaysia hopes to curtail the spread of vehicle theft and vehicle cloning.

The RFID tag under consideration by the JPJ is designed to shatter in a tampering attempt and send a warning signal to the JPJ and police.

The idea of implementing RFID tags was first mooted by the Transport Ministry in 2005 under the Automated Enforcement System of the Malaysian government. The government also installed 700 surveillance cameras across Malaysia under the initiative.

The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar also advocated the use of RFID to the Transport Ministry in 2013.

RFID or e-plate technology is used the world over (US, UK, Australia and France to name a few) to reduce incidents of vehicle theft and registration forgery.
