Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) will soon have a CCTV surveillance network for protecting its 18.8km-long perimeter.

The official airport operator – Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (MIAL) – has already started the tendering process for CSIA.

Preventing security breaches at airports, which unavoidably have hugely long perimeters to protect, is always a huge challenge.

CCTV surveillance can provide real-time visuals where a intrusion is detected by the perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS), which then directly notifies the Control Room where operators can take necessary action.

The 18.8 km airport perimeter wall is patrolled by almost 120 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel whereas the PIDS wall is about 10.8-km long.

“The integration will be such that the CCTV cameras will pinpoint the exact location where the PIDS sensor system goes off. With the CCTV network, the exact location and nature of threat can be seen real-time,” says an MIAL official.

The PIDS system which has been operational since November 2014, has already detected two intrusionswhich prompted the CISF to urge the MIAL to install a razor wire mesh in vulnerable points along the perimeter.

“It has been designed to detect vibrations caused by humans and dogs, basically real threats, unlike birds,” says Captain Akshay Kumar, managing director, Slingshot Security Solutions Pvt Ltd, the company that installed the PIDS at the airport.

The seven-foot high PIDS “wall” is around 10 feet inside the actual perimeter wall of the airport. Before the cameras are installed CISF personnel patrolled the perimeter.
