Pentonville prison will deploy VehicleScan surveillance technology to scan the underside of vehicles as they enter the site.
Chemring Technology Solutions, which developed the technology, was awarded the contract to support the prison’s security team in identifying concealed explosives, weaponry, drugs or other objects deemed a security threat.
The new system represents an improvement in terms of how long it takes to review scans and significantly reduces waiting times for vehicles entering the prison site, the prison authorities concluded in awarding the contract.
Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) VehicleScan builds and maintains a detailed database of vehicles and images and alerts an operator to any changes to a vehicle’s underside during subsequent visits to the prison.
The new system will also identify blacklisted vehicles that attempt to enter the site.
VehicleScan harnesses high-resolution line-scan technology to deliver full colour images of the underside of a vehicle with millimetre-scale detail. Chemring Technology Solutions, a Hampshire-based specialist in military security solutions, also develops CCTV, standalone ANPR, and site access control equipment.
