Samsung Launches SmartThings Home Automation Hub With “Bank Level” Security

Samsung SmartThings launches advanced Home Automation Hub with Video MonitoringProduct in a nutshell: After acquiring SmartThings last year Samsung has launched a home automation hub for controlling lights, thermostats, doors and more with additional sensors and a video monitoring feature.

Sectors/verticals: Home/residential

Features:

  • Battery backup: Battery lasts up to 10 hours in case of power outage
  • Powerful processor: The latest hub has been equipped with a faster processor in comparison to earlier versions to cope with the demands of a new video monitoring capability.
  • Warning alerts: Warning alerts about things such as water leaks.
  • Local task execution: Redesigned to enable local execution for certain tasks without the need for an internet connection
  • Revamped App: Uers can now directly organise and control devices by room and customise actions to occur automatically based on preset routines
  • Buffering feature: The newly added buffering feature lets the recording to start prior to the triggering event so users can see what caused the incident

Compatibility: The SmartThings home automation hub is compatible with almost 200 devices in an arena where compatibility issues are seen as the principal bulwark to adoption. It also works with ZigBee and Z-Wave radios.

Manufacturer says: “You’ll get a text, alert or video notification if there is smoke or anything else happens in your home. So you can act before it turns into a disaster,” said Alex Hawkinson, CEO and founder of SmartThings.

Samsung’s president of UK and Ireland Andy Griffiths said: “We believe a connected home will provide users [with] more information, more piece of mind and more control in their lives – but privacy is fundamental.

“The whole thing is encrypted end-to-end – think bank-level security – while we have continuous security checks and third-party auditing. Only you will have access to any data stored in the cloud.”

Price and availability: A starter pack including the hub, a door closer sensor, a motion sensor, a presence sensor and a power outlet switch for turning something else on and off will cost £199. A range of other SmartThings devices, including a moisture sensor, a camera and a sleep monitor will cost in the region of £30 each with more launches planned later in the year.
