Supreme Courts Orders Installation of CCTV Cameras in All Prisons

Supreme Courts Orders Installation of CCTV Cameras in All Prisons

The Supreme Court has made it obligatory for both central and state governments to ensure that all prisons nationwide must get CCTV cameras installed.

The Supreme Court also instructed that even police lock-ups should be brought under surveillance in case of any untoward incidents.

The time limit allowed by Supreme Court for installing CCTVs in prisons should be completed within one year and not exceed beyond two years. The court also said that each police station should have at least two women constables.

On the issue of filling vacancies in the state human rights commissions, Justice Thakur has allowed no more than three months to complete the hiring.

The union territories have also been directed by the court to set up their state human rights commission. The fact that none of these union territories, including Delhi, have an existing human rights commission was also pointed out during the judgement.
