TDSi MD John Davies Wins BSIA Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Exports

TDSi MD John Davies, Tyco’s Martin Harvey and Emily O’Mahony of Securitas were among the recipients of the BSIA’s latest Chairman’s Awards.

Handpicked by Dirk Wilson, director of Sector Security Services Ltd and BSIA police and public services section chairman the winners were presented with the accolades at the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon at the London Hilton on Park Lane on 12 July.

Martin Harvey, head of regulatory affairs at Tyco/ADT, was presented with the Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Standards. Across more than four decades Harvey has been influential in committees and organisations that have overseen the development of fire and security standards.

Following his work with the British Fire Protection Systems Association he became Chairman of the Fire Industry Association in 2012. He is now involved in a number of BSI and CENELEC security systems committees.

He represents the UK on three key standards committees for alarm systems, alarm receiving centres and integrated systems and recently made the IFSEC Global’s list of top 50 most influential figures in the fire and security industries.

The award for Contribution to Exporting went to TDSi MD John Davies, who is also chairman of the BSIA’s Export Council – his second stint in the role. First elected Vice-Chair of the Export Council in 2008, John has been instrumental in formulating guidance to would-be exporters in the UK security industry.

He later became chairman of the Export Council in 2010 and served on the UKTI DSO’s Security Sector Advisory Group. He now serves on the Home Office’s Security Resilience and Growth Partnership.

Said Davies: “With the current political situation in the UK surrounding Brexit, it has never been more important for businesses here to understand and work with markets internationally. What has struck me having worked with the BSIA – and TDSi on a commercial level – is how well respected UK providers and products are around the world.”

Davies says that “Although China has a huge manufacturing base of its own, customers there are extremely shrewd and like to buy the best solutions on the market, with a huge respect for UK suppliers.

“The British and European markets are steadily expanding, but there is huge scope in many other markets around the world. In my role at the BSIA I am very keen to ensure British security businesses fully understand the opportunities on offer and don’t let perceived language and cultural barriers get in the way of the exciting sales opportunities on offer.”

“The UK has some of the best scientific and technological minds in the world, with a great reputation for quality and innovation. It’s a privilege to chair the Export Council and I am passionate about its aims, so I am very humbled to receive this award from my peers.”

A company that started out as a social enterprise won the gong for Contribution to the Community. Founded in 2008 Vigilance Properties Ltd has helped more than 600 former soldiers to establish civilian careers in security over the past eight years.

Studies suggest that as many as 5,000 former services personnel are homeless in the UK.

The award recognised the company’s significant fundraising efforts, particularly around London Poppy Day in support of the Royal British Legion. Staff from Vigilance Properties and armed forces personnel have raised £77,000 for this cause in just two years.

The Chairman’s Award for Contribution to the Industry, meanwhile, was awarded to Detective Inspector Georgina Barnard. Closely involved with the Police and Security (PaS) initiative since its 2014 inception Barnard was recognised by the BSIA for her proactive, productive contribution in promoting dialogue and collaboration between the Metropolitan Police and the private security industry.

Emily O’Mahony, head of learning and development at Securitas UK, received the Chairman’s Award for Contribution to Training. O’Mahony has helped ensure that training and development is accorded a high priority by Securitas, with more than 13,000 staff benefiting from the organisation’s training programmes since she took up her post in 2014.

A year after she joined the guarding company it opened a state-of-the-art training and development academy that soon became a City & Guilds Accredited Training Centre – the first training centre in the security industry to do so.

BSIA chairman Dirk Wilson said: “I am proud to be able to recognise these individuals whose commitment and dedication has made a lasting impression on our industry, both in the UK and abroad. The actions of this year’s winners have all served to promote our industry in a positive light and I am delighted to be able to commend the impact they have made.”
