Don’t drink and drive your fire engine

A fireman in south-eastern China wrecked a brand-new £500,000 fire engine after taking it for a drunken joy ride.

Chen Huangxin, who got behind the wheel after a night of heavy drinking, drove into a lorry, knocked down a pole carrying overhead electrical wires, hit several parked cars and then overturned the fire engine, destroying the cab and injuring himself in the process.

Huangxin, who was three times over the drink-drive limit at the time, has been sacked from the fire service. He faces a number of charges and a possible two-year jail sentence and has apologised for his behaviour.

Tiny London studio flat to be investigated by council

Fire authorities are to inspect the miniscule studio flat that recently became a symbol of London’s escalating property prices.

The flat, near King’s Cross, consisted of a very small room into which had been crammed a double mattress, a wardrobe, a sink and several fitted kitchen units, leaving barely enough room to open the front door or walk round the bed, let alone swing a cat.

Islington Council has asked the fire service to inspect the shoebox flat to ensure it conforms to fire safety standards, as it suspects that the flat may have been converted from a larger studio flat without planning permission, a fact disputed by the landlord. Nevertheless, the flat rented for £170 a week in less than 16 hours.
