Understanding the Total Cost of Ownership for IP Surveillance

The IP surveillance industry, with 15,000 deployments globally, focuses too much on up-front costs and can tend to ignore the rest.

That was the claim of Aimetis vice president of product management Justin Schorn, who was addressing the Promise Technology Theatre at IFSEC International 2016.

Schorn, who delivered a presentation on understanding the total cost of ownership for IP surveillance systems, said the costs of an IP surveillance system could be broken down into four areas:

  • Hardware and software
  • Installation
  • Operations and administration
  • End-user productivity

Schorn, who has been at Aimetis since 2003, stressed the importance of looking at the cost of ownership in its totality – rather than the costs of procurement and initial installation – because you cannot look at things in isolation; you have to look at the interplay between these components.

He suggested that costs can be distributed differently. For example, you could buy bandwidth-efficient cameras to reduce ongoing network costs, or use fewer VMS servers to save time and rack space.

Aimetis, a Senstar company, provides integrated video management solutions for surveillance and business intelligence applications. Pushing video analytics as an integral part of video management solutions the anadian-based company has embraced open platform technologies that provide customers with a route to IP surveillance from legacy analogue systems.

Aimetis, which is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, sells solutions through distributors and certified partners in more than 100 countries.

Last year IFSEC Global reported on Aimetis’ launch of the 25 channel E7060A NVR with analytics.
