Warning on impact of new fire regulations

Peter Lackey, ADT’s Fire Product Manager, said: “More than half of all UK Fire and Rescue responses are due to false alarms. As a result, the Government has tasked the Fire and Rescue services with taking measures to reduce this. It is these changes which could have a significant effect on businesses. The Chief Fire Officers Association is launching a Model Fire Licence agreement – its main aim is to reduce the impact of false fire alarms from business and commerce and improve the fire safety management of protected premises.

“Implemented in three stages over the next three years, it will eventually affect every fire detection system monitored via an alarm receiving centre. It is vital that businesses start to address how effective their current levels of fire protection are and ensure they meet the rigorous standards that the CFOA is setting.”

ADT has produced a guide called ‘False Fire Alarms – the burning issues’, which offers support and guidance to businesses about the changes in legislation. It is available by visiting www.adt.co.uk/fireurn or by calling 0800 010 999.

Cirrus Communications Systems is offering professional advice and consultation on the new Government measures to reform fire safety legislation, to help var ous sectors establish what affect it will have on their organisation.”The most significant aspect of the proposed changes is that fire certification sign off carried out at present by the fire brigade will become a thing of the past,” the company says.

“Each individual company or development will be totally responsible for carrying out its own fire safety risk asses ment under a Fire Safety Order.”
