Wavesight Wireless Radios Deployed at Major Nigerian ports

Wavesight has supplied telecommunications equipment to the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).

The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) operates the country’s major ports, including Lagos port complex, Tin Can island port, Calabar, Delta, Harcourt and Onne port.

With Boko Haram still wreaking havoc across the region, site security at such vital economic arteries is obviously a major priority for the Nigerian government.

Supported from a single command and control centre a ‘Metropolitan Area Network’ is being established across the ports to consolidate and streamline existing communications and surveillance systems.

Covering such vast distances the ports were not suitable for a cable-based solution, so masts were erected instead. A wireless network solution offered connection between otherwise unreachable ship entry and exit points.

nigeria portsWavesight, which beat a number of competitors to the contract, chose the most appropriate ‘ruggedised’ equipment providing real-time video, voice, data and radar traffic delivery capable of operating in harsh coastal conditions with low maintenance.

The chosen system integrator – a well-known player in both Africa and Europe – tested Wavesight’s solution in a coastal environment over the course of two years. Once satisfied the NPA gave the go-ahead for Wavesight to deploy 100 microwave radio links in phase one of the project.

As well as providing wireless transceiver products Wavesight Wireless Solutions rendered a range of services to ensure the system was deployed effectively with minimal operational disruptions, including a detailed RF site survey, network design, installation, commissioning and training of the integrator’s engineers.

After completion of the first phase NPA could monitor ship movement, piloting of ships to and out of the docks and assist SOS calls to evaluate risk and provide rescue services – all from a centralised command and control centre. The system is readily scalable with scope for advanced integration and further phases of development.
