Wireless Networks are Invariably Poorly Protected Against Security Breaches, IT Decision-Makers Believe

wi fi wirelessWireless networks are believed to be one of the most vulnerable aspects of enterprise IT infrastructure by a majority of IT professionals.

Reported in an online survey of 1,490 Information Technology Decision Makers (ITDMs) globally by Fortinet wireless security was considered to be seriously lagging behind core networking infrastructure when it comes to security.

The responses logged regarding how confident are respondents with their existing wireless security applications differed from region to region, with China-based respondents the most concerned – 71% expressing this sentiment. Those in India polled in second place with 61%, while those in Japan showed the least concern at only 13%.

The findings, however, did not come as a surprise to the survey researchers as according to them more than 30% of the enterprises do not have a basic authentication security procedure for internal employees let alone third-party users.

The possible eventuality of losing sensitive corporate or customer data was the main cause of worry for almost half of ITDMs in the event of a network compromise. Corporate spying was the second highest risk and in third spot lies non-compliance of established legal procedures and interruption in services offered by the company.

“Despite the growth in mobility strategies, wireless security has simply not been a priority for enterprises till date,” said Rajesh Maurya, Country Manager (India and SAARC), Fortinet.

“As advanced persistent attacks increasingly target multiple entry points and the cloud becomes more prevalent, it is not an issue organisations should risk any longer.”
