ASSA ABLOY UK is campaigning for the mandatory inspection of fire doors.Once a fire door is installed, building owners or managers – the ‘responsible person’ – are not obliged to perform maintenance inspections.
ASSA ABLOY, the world’s largest lock manufacturer by sales volume, is showcasing its fire door safety products at an event taking place in the House of Commons on Wednesday 1 November.
Hosted by Ian Austin MP for Dudley North, ‘Made in the Black Country’ will feature British brands based in the West Midlands.
ASSA ABLOY UK, whose recently revamped head office is based in the Black Country (in Willenhall), is raising awareness about fire doors through a new LinkedIn group. Called It’s Time To Talk About Fire Doors, the page will provide a forum for discussions around the issue and connect followers with experts in this field for advice and support.
Driven by the fallout from the Grenfell fire in June and the success of Fire Door Safety Week, the deficiencies of many so-called fire doors has been a growing concern – within and outside the fire industry.
“Three million fire doors are installed every year in the UK, but incorrect specification, poor installation and a lack of maintenance is still common,” said Brian Sofley, Managing Director at ASSA ABLOY Security Doors. “Fire doors save lives, and it is absolutely critical that they are operating correctly at all times. We will be raising awareness of this important issue at this event, discussing the current challenges with MPs and considering how this can be overcome.”
The UK’s first fire door installation qualification was recently piloted with a view to delivering the full course in December 2017.
