ATG Access, which supplies bollards and other vehicle barriers, has enhanced its proprietary Surface Guard system to withstand the force of a lorry.The system recently passed impact tests, where it prevented a 7,200kg lorry travelling at 32kph from penetrating less than five metres.
Surface Guard is supplied as individual units of lightweight surface-mounted barriers that can be deployed and removed quickly and easily, with no surface fixings. The system is suitable for protecting the public at outdoor events.
ATG unveiled the first barrier in the Surface Guard range in August 2017.
Recently the company integrated a vehicle access point into the system to allow emergency vehicles to pass through the barrier, if an incident does occur or where authorised vehicles need to gain access.
The access point, which is manually operated, is made with reinforced steel plates so the barrier can cope with the axel loadings of a fire engine or ambulance. The surface plates are painted in a bright colour so vehicles can easily spot the access route, saving vital response time.
Gavin Hepburn, director at ATG Access, said: “Given the vast array of vehicles that have been used as weapons so far – from regular cars to heavy goods vehicles – we wanted to make sure that our innovative Surface Guard system could withstand the impact from lorry attacks as well as car attacks.
“The product is the first and only product of its kind available on the market that can be pedestrian permeable and also provide an emergency vehicle access point.”
The barrier system has designed to be unobtrusive and complement its surroundings, while allowing pedestrians and cyclists move freely throughout areas where the barrier is installed.
Since the launch of Surface Guard, just five months ago, it has already been deployed to protect high profile events, including the official reopening of Motcomb Street in London, the Lord Mayor’s show in London as well as being installed at several Premier League football stadiums.
Hundreds of Surface Guard units have also been dispatched to the US, following the vehicle attack in New York, with ATG Access winning the title of Export Champion of the Year at the Amazon Growing Business Awards.
