Bluerad launches fire suppression device to combat domestic appliance fires

British firm Bluerad has developed a simple device to suppress fires in homes that can be caused by domestic appliances.

The recent spate of fires that have been attributed to domestic appliances, such as tumble dryers, have led to product recalls by brands including Whirlpool and has fuelled growing concern among consumer groups such as Which?

However, Bluerad claims to have developed a simple and effective device, based on a copolymer smart material designed to release water where and when it is needed most in order to suppress the beginnings of a fire.

The Blueproof K solution forms a nozzle on the surface closest to the heat source. When activated it releases water and also tracks the movement of the fire. The water expands to create vapour, which absorbs the fire’s energy, reducing temperatures and keeping the spread of fire under control.

Washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers are often located under work surfaces and in concealed positions that other fire suppression devices cannot reach.

According to Dave Atkinson, the founder of Bluerad and co-inventor of Blueproof, his company modified a device originally used with radiators, saying it “has been adapted for easy application to the water supply feeding domestic appliances.”

Between 2011 and 2014, domestic appliances, including washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers accounted for over 4,500 fires in the UK.
