FIA unveils new installation courses to complete pathway to Level 3 RQF qualification

The FIA has announced three new courses aimed at installers of fire detection and alarm systems.

The courses are now available to those who have passed their foundation course and the four units completed will together qualify the learner to FIA AO Level 3 in Fire Detection and Alarm Installation, Theory, and Regulatory Requirements.

The three new units – Health & Safety, the Environment and Advanced Installer – are aimed at designers, installers, maintainers and commissioners.

Each new course will be taught by experts in the field and help learners benefit from their combined experience of the industry.

The one day Health and Safety course will enable learners to get a deeper understanding of the potential workplace hazards and how to avoid them and ensure safer workplace environments.

The Environment course will guide learners through the environmental factors that affect those working in the fire detection and alarm sector. This will cover areas like waste management as well as look at the various environmental laws that dictate how companies can operate in the sector.

The Advanced Installer unit helps the learner work to service standard EN 16763, BS 5839/IS 3218, the Construction Design Management Regulations (CDM) 2015, building regulations, documentation such as the log book, and installation methodology. It will cover:

  • How to apply fire safety law, codes of practice and guidance
  • Systems installation, systems testing and fault finding
  • Documentation necessary for installation and handover to other key stakeholders, including commissioning technicians and the end user

“We recommend booking early to secure the date you want.” Martin Duggan, general manager, FIA

If learners believe they hold ‘recognised prior learning’, they are advised to log details with the FIA.

For example, a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent, might qualify them to pass the new Health and Safety Course.

“We’re expecting a large number of bookings,” advised Martin Duggan, general manager of the FIA.  “Our learners have been anticipating the next set of courses and so we expect places to fill up and courses to sell out very quickly.

“We’re doing everything we can to add as many dates and locations for these new courses, but we recommend booking early to secure the date you want.”

The FIA qualification pathway is currently the only route to a nationally recognised qualification set at rated at Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) , equivalent to Level 4 on the European Qualifications Framework. This effectively means meeting the level specified in the service standard EN 16763.

EN 16763, ‘Services for Fire Safety and Security Systems’ lays out the minimum levels of education that technicians should have.  Although not mandatory by law, the standard specifies that those working on a system should be qualified to at least a Level 3 on the European Qualifications Framework.
