Fire alarm activated as man hurls extinguishers from high-rise office

Workers at a 17-storey office building in Bristol had to run for cover as a man ran amok and started throwing fire extinguishers and furniture out of a window.

The man is understood to have activated the fire alarm at the Castlemead building before making his way up to the tenth floor as staff were being evacuated. He then started to set off fire extinguishers and throw them, together with chairs and computers, out of the window.

The incident happened at around 7.20pm on Tuesday 22 November.

A worker at the building told the Daily Telegraph:

"The first thing anyone knew about it was the fire alarm going off, so everybody exited. Everyone got outside to the fire assembly point out the front, and then a fire extinguisher came flying out through the window.

"Apparently someone was letting off the fire extinguishers all over the place, and when he threw them out they were still going off and spinning all over the place as they fell.”

Several people, including two firefighters, were reported injured, though not seriously. Most of the debris landed on the canopy over the building’s front entrance.

A 49-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary and common assault was released on bail.

The building’s management company was reviewing security in the light of the incident.
