Fire and security apprentices from a Lanarkshire college have been through what effectively serves as a qualification round for IFSEC’s Engineers of Tomorrow competition, held in June.
Held as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the competition saw 35 third-year trainees strive to install either an intruder or fire alarm to British and European standards in just two hours.
The four winners will now travel to London in June to take part in IFSEC International’s 19th annual ‘Engineers of Tomorrow’ contest, which takes place at ExCeL London (20-22 June – get your free badge).
They will then compete alongside more than 50 young engineers in a 90-minute installation challenge that takes places across three days. The overall heat winners and their employers are invited to the Security & Fire Excellence Awards, taking place in November.
“Competitions like this are good for our apprentices’ learning experiences,” says Curriculum and Quality Leader David Scott. “Competing makes learning challenging, it motivates apprentices and keeps them enthusiastic. We’ve had some students who have really shone in a way that we weren’t expecting.
“By taking part in Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we’re highlighting to employers the benefits of taking on apprentices.”
The competition ran alongside a similar competition for joinery and carpentry apprentices.
New College Lanarkshire was recently named ‘Best in the UK’ for the third time in four years at the WorldSkills UK trade skills competition and offers modern apprenticeships in a wide range of disciplines.
