CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS

Global security threats to be addressed by distinguished line-up of speakers at IFSEC 2018

Cityforum and London First will present a series of masterclasses and half-day summits during IFSEC between 19-21 June 2018.

These sessions will look at what the future might hold for the security industry as well as discussing today’s issues.  Much of the future will be affected by thinking about what has to happen now and this will be a key focus of the sessions.

2030 forecast – emergent threats to national security (IFSEC Keynote Arena, free-to-attend)

We begin with two masterclasses on the opening day of IFSEC.  In the morning session, the distinguished US security expert and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary, the Hon Michael Chertoff assesses the changing threat picture that will face corporates, officials and security leaders as we live through the next decade. He will focus on what he sees as the big problems we shall have to confront ten years from now. This masterclass is chaired by the Rt Hon Baroness Neville-Jones whose experience and expertise give her the ability to examine what will face governments and what they will need to do if they are to respond effectively.

Facing up to cyber risk in an open society (IFSEC Keynote Arena, free-to-attend)

During the afternoon, Mr Edward Lucas, whose columns in the Times make fascinating weekly reading, moderates a discussion that features two leading US figures – Professor John Mallery, the MIT academic and Dr Pippa Malmgren of DRPM Group who has served as a Special Assistant in a Republican White House.  John Mallery focuses on the critical cyber risks that will face open societies in the next decade and Pippa Malmgren will look at economic threats and opportunities in a digitised economy.

Policing and future safety and security (IFSEC Keynote Arena, free-to-attend)

The masterclass on 20 June is chaired by the distinguished former Deputy Director of the National Security Agency, Professor Chris Inglis, who is now at the US Naval War College. He guides a discussion on policing with Dr Kathy O’Toole, lately Chief of the Seattle Police Department, who is now chairing the major inquiry into the future of An Garda Síochána in Ireland. She is to focus on the leadership challenges to those who have to guide the public service in notably uncertain times. She is joined by Mr Silvino Schlickmann Jnr, the hugely experienced Brazilian expert who has currently responsibility for Interpol.

The masterclasses are designed to encourage critical observation, questioning and discussion.

Fourth Industrial Revolution (Summit at IFSEC, paid-for conference)

During the morning of 20 June, and 21 June, Cityforum and London First are presenting two half-day summits which have been designed to bring together leading international authorities to look at and discuss, among themselves and with the attendees, questions made particularly pertinent by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the effects of hugely significant changes stemming from science and technology on the way we work and how we live.  Artificial intelligence and computing at the human-machine interface are two of the areas highlighted for discussion.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution poses security, ethical and legal challenges with which society will have to come to terms in short order and find answers to a myriad of issues that cannot be ignored. What to do and how to avoid actions that lead to unintended consequences is the theme of a round table with Professors Chris Inglis, John Mallery and Nick Jennings and Dr Huma Shah.  This discussion is followed by a linked session on the data tsunami and how to benefit from it, rather than being overwhelmed by it or taking wrong steps because of problems with data.  Sir David Omand, former National Security Coordinator, Mr Richard Berry of OSCT and Ms Kriti Sharma join Chris Inglis for this discussion.

Smart cities and safe environments (Summit at IFSEC, paid-for conference)

The half day round-table on 21 June focuses on how to deliver smart cities and develop a safe environment for people at home, at work and on the move. This morning session features top officials, police, experts on future crime and on the views of minorities which do not always believe themselves secure in societies at risk from terror attack. Mr Stefan Stern, the well-respected management writer, chairs this morning discussion.

Communications, social media and incident management  (IFSEC Keynote Arena, free-to-attend)

Mr Stefan Stern continues with a masterclass on the afternoon of 21 June on social media and its contribution to safety and security. Mr Tarique Ghaffur, the former Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police features in both sessions with interpretations of minority concerns.  Mr Mike Croll speaks from Facebook in what promises to be a particularly fascinating masterclass to bring to a close three days of high-level, stimulating and thoughtful discussion.
