Fiery sushi ingredient used in alarm for the deaf

Wasabi is the hot green coloured paste that is commonly eaten with Japanese sushi.

But according to BBC correspondent Roland Buerk, the sometimes eye-watering ingredient has been used as the basis for a fire alarm for deaf people. The device emits a stream of extract of wasabi which, said a spokesperson from the fragrance technology company that developed it, will wake most people within one or two minutes.
