Jaipur police have asked banks to improve the quality of CCTV cameras installed in ATMs to guard against crime.

In a meeting held between key police officials and various bankers at Jaipur police headquarters Omendra Bhardwaj, director general of Police (DGP) has asked banks to provide full support to the police department in curbing ATM crimes.

Aiming improve the overall ATM security and prevent cloning of ATM cards, the police department has also suggested that banks hire only properly trained of security guards and use chip-based automated teller machines (ATM) cards instead of magnetic strip cards.

The city police have a poor track record of solving ATM-related crime, usually due to a lack of evidence. In some cases robbers have even uprooted the ATM and carried it with them.

So often have such incidents been occurring that the DGP has called a meeting of bank representatives and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

DGP Bhardwaj says: “We have requested the banks to take necessary measures on their part. We have asked them to improve the quality of CCTVs so that a person entering the ATM cabin can be identified clearly.

“The CCTVs installed outside the cabins should be able to rotate 180 degrees, so that they can capture images of the road outside the cabin in a wider range and with more clarity.”

Bhardwaj officer recommended that banksstrictly follow security guidelines and that each bank should set up a state-level control room in Jaipur so that crime related issues can reach higher authorities quickly.
