Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

After 20 years using an access control system, Lund University’s Faculty of Law was looking to upgrade.

Lund University is large; its ever-shifting roster of students, lecturers, researchers, support staff and visitors need access to various faculty areas. How to update everyone’s access rights without requiring almost 50,000 people to return their university smart cards? The answer was Aperio® wireless locks from ASSA ABLOY.

The key ingredient is seamless integration between Aperio® locks and Pacom’s Unison security management platform, which was already installed at the university. Aperio® battery-powered escutcheons and cylinders with card readers are fully integrated with Pacom’s Unison system, and have been installed wirelessly at the Law Faculty.

“With Aperio® we were able to quickly and easily install a complete online system.” Magnus Svensson, Infrastructure Manager, Lund University

“With Aperio® we were able to quickly and easily install a complete online system,” says Magnus Svensson, Infrastructure Manager at Lund University.

The transition for Lund staff and students was practically invisible. Aperio® locks work with the university’s existing MIFARE® smart cards, so there was no need for 42,000 students and around 7,500 staff to return their cards for reprogramming, or even to reactivate their permissions using update readers. Everything is managed centrally from a single, simple administration interface.

“Aperio® has proven to be very cost effective and is really appreciated by staff and students,” adds Magnus Svensson.

Because Aperio® locks can be managed online, security managers can block lost cards centrally, without the need for technicians to visit the door. It is easy to de-authorise staff and students who leave the university. An operator simply removes them from the user database in the Unison system and their smart card no longer opens doors. There’s no changing locks and no longer any security threat from lost or copied physical keys — which saves the university money, too.

The result? Security staff who spend more time on security, and less on key management and other labour-intensive administrative tasks.

“We have been able to reduce the time we spend on user management and system administration radically,” says Magnus Svensson.
