Chidambaram reviews Crime & Criminal Tracking Network project

According to him, the highlight of the month of April was the peaceful conduct of elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The elections in West Bengal are underway. Barring a few isolated incidents, full security was provided to the voters as well as election officials. A total of 758 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) were deployed for purposes of the elections.

On April 15, a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs was held to review the progress made in CCTNS (Crime & Criminal Tracking and Network System) project.

“I am happy to report that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 was held between February 19, 2011 and April 2, 2011 and concluded peacefully and without any untoward incident. I compliment the state police forces and the Central armed police forces that did a splendid job in providing security during the period of the tournament,” he remarked.

Internal Security

Chidambaram revealed that an amount of Rs 16.10 crore was released to Indian Air Force for the airlifts provided for anti-naxal operations during 2010-11. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has initiated the process of employment of 434 retired Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and 1736 retired non-commissioned officers (NCOs) on contractual basis to form counter- Improvised explosive device (IED) teams in 62 CRPF battalions deployed for anti-naxal operations.

A scheme for construction/strengthening of 400 fortified police stations at the rate of Rs 2 crore in 83 districts of LWE affected States at the total cost of Rs 800 crore has been approved. An initial amount of Rs 10 crore has been released to the State Governments for implementation of the scheme.

In 2010-11, a sum of Rs 626.34 crore was released to LWE affected States under various schemes. This compares well with the amount of Rs 162.00 crore released in 2009-10 and Rs 244.00 crore released in 2008-09. A sum of Rs 42 lakh was also sanctioned as assistance to 14 beneficiaries at the rate of Rs 3 lakh each under the Central scheme of assistance to the victims of terrorist/communal/naxal violence.

On April 27, Rs 19.91 crore were released to 17 states for setting up regional forensic science laboratories and district mobile forensic units under the plan scheme of directorate of forensic science services.

Coastal Security: Against the target of 204 boats, 200 boats have been supplied so far. The remaining four boats are ready for delivery and will be dispatched as soon as the State Governments concerned are prepared to take delivery.
