Barbour: A guide to home working
With a wide variety of roles covered in the security and fire sectors, and a growth of digital, connected solutions, there are likely a increasing number of professionals who are realistically able to work from home or remotely – whether temporarily or on a part-time basis. There are, of course, many of those in the sector who are unable to do this, but for those who are able to, Barbour has put together its comprehensive guide for home working.
Alongside some other resources you can find at the bottom of this article, the full Barbour guide covers:
- legal requirements for employers to be aware of
- benefits of home working
- potential drawbacks of home working
- managing home workers
- arrangements for securing health and safety at home
The British Safety Council is also offering free online training courses for home workers as the nation changes its working habits to meet the threat of coronavirus. As millions of workers in Britain set themselves up to work from home, they will be adjusting to a whole new way of working and preparing to miss the social contact of their workplace. To support them the British Safety Council is offering courses for free until the middle of April:
- Remote Workers’ Health Safety and Welfare
- Mental Health: Start the Conversation are aimed at all employees

The National Cyber Security Centre has also outlined its advice to working from home, advising people on how to set up emails securely, not to click on potentially suspicious links and attachments (see article on coronavirus-related cyber-scams, for example), and advice for what to do if you are concerned you may have fallen victim.
Many businesses have begun to embrace the idea of flexible working and working from home and, in the current climate, more and more of us may find ourselves plunged into doing so for longer than the one to two days a week, which employers and employees adapt to fairly easily. Our sister title, SHP Online, has put together another useful guide, which you can find, below.
