“Sheer terror and panic” as overheating drill sparks fire on London commuter train

Commuters evacuated a packed London train in “sheer terror and panic” after a small fire was sparked by an overheated workman’s drill.

Called to Dalston Kingsland station in east London on Wednesday firefighters extinguished the drill’s battery pack and placed it in a bucket of sand.

One passenger witnessed “sheer terror and panic” aboard the train, while another said that “everyone jumped onto the tracks. It was horrific.”

One tweet reported that passengers “stampeded off the train screaming”.

Shanty town fire leaves 15,000 homeless in Manila

A fire that swept through a densely populated shanty town near Manila’s docks has left 15,000 people homeless, according to authorities in the Philippines capital.

Breaking out late on Tuesday night the fire raged for 10 hours and injured seven people. No fatalities were reported by a senior fire officer in the city.

More than 1,000 houses, largely made of highly flammable materials, were destroyed.

Manila is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and widespread ignorance of safety regulations in homes and businesses makes it vulnerable to deadly fires. In 2015, for instance, 72 workers were killed when they were trapped in a rubber slipper factory near Manila.

Three pensioners die in Hornchurch fire

Three pensioners have lost their lives following a blaze in a house in east London.

One woman, 68, died at the scene, while two men, aged 76 and 74, later died in hospital.

The fire broke out at just after 4am on Monday.

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said: “My thoughts and those of everyone at the brigade are with the friends and family of the three people who have died following the tragic fire in Hornchurch on Monday morning.

“Firefighters worked extremely hard and did all they could in difficult conditions.”

81 firefighters tackle huge blaze near the Shard in London

It took 81 firefighters to extinguish a a blaze at a block of flats and offices in southwark on Tuesday afternoon.

Station Manager Mark Reed said: “When crews arrived, thick smoke was drifting across the rooftops of Southwark and our control centre received multiple calls about the fire. Crews worked quickly to contain the fire and minimise it’s spread and they will now be cutting away at the building to ensure that the fire is not smouldering in ceiling and wall voids.”

No one was injured in the fire, the cause of which remains unknown.
