Apprenticeships

Skills for Security gains ‘trusted training provider’ status

Skills for Security has been accepted onto the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP), qualifying it for UK government funding to deliver apprenticeships as of May 2017.

Passing all elements of the application, including due diligence checks on compliance, the training provider has satisfied the Skills Funding Agency, which manages the RoATP, that it is capable of delivering high-quality apprenticeship training.

Training providers have to be on the register to be eligible to deliver training – either directly or as a subcontractor – to large, levy-paying employers, according to new government policy. Out of 2,327 applications, 73% made the grade.

Peter Sherry, the interim director general of Skills for Security, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Skills for Security has been accepted onto the RoATP, giving employers in the security sector the confidence that we – as the sector skills body for the industry – can provide them with trusted support and expertise in equipping the workforce of tomorrow with a solid educational foundation through a carefully considered system of training, assessment and qualifications.”

The gvernment’s apprenticeship reforms aim to support an increase in the quality and quantity of apprenticeships, enabling a greater number of individuals to pursue a successful career.

Apprenticeships and Skills Minister Robert Halfon said: “Giving employers control over their apprenticeships needs and funding is an essential feature of our plan to create an apprenticeships and skills nation. Our new register of apprenticeship providers will mean that only organisations that have passed our quality assurance can deliver apprenticeships.”

Skills for Security sponsors – and founded – the Engineers of Tomorrow competition, in which apprentice engineers pit their skills against one another in a security installation competition. The next competition takes place at IFSEC International 2017, between 20-22 June, at ExCeL London. Apply to enter apprentices in the competition here
