Integrated CCTV and PA system boosts rail security

Combining remote monitoring of stations for security, customer information displays and PA facilities for safety, the CCTV system includes 250 Philips colour cameras, with images being recorded on high quality video tape. Operators based at the central control room in Swindon keep watch over the stations and can identify incidents as well as act as a deterrent against vandalism at the stations. The linked PA system allows both operator and computer generated voice announcements to be made to deter crime at the stations. It is also linked to the fire system to provide fire warning and evacuation notices in emergencies.
Philips CSI was sub-contracted to design and install the entire system by Datel Rail Systems Ltd of Preston. Mike Varney of Datel said the company was chosen because "they could supply the very latest high performance CCTV and PA system from their own range and had the expertise to advise and plan the entire CCTV/PA system from scratch".
