Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

WATCH: Cladding, Hackitt Report and other FPA Infozone talks previewed by BT Redcare

The FPA Infozone, sponsored by BT Redcare, will return to FIREX to host a series of presentations on a variety of important fire safety topics including the FPA’s view on the Hackitt report, cladding, fire-stopping, safety for lone workers and many more.

As well as all the fire safety content that will be provided by the FPA, each day at 10:20, Rob McLaughlin and Sodhi Dillon from BT Redcare will kick off the day’s sessions with a talk on the role of IP and telephone lines and provide insight into what that means for the future of alarm and protection systems.

In this series of videos, Nick Whiting, Head of Product at BT Redcare, sits down with Melissa Harrison, Events Coordinator at the Fire Protection Association, to preview the sessions taking place on each day of FIREX 2018. Each talk will last between 30 and 40 minutes and will finish with a Q&A to allow attendees to raise any issues with the technical experts.

TUESDAY

John Briggs, Head of Risk Services and Training, at the FPA will incorporate content from the FPA training courses into his talk at 11:00 on who the responsible person is when it comes to fire safety.

Each day at 12:00, FPA senior staff will present on the topic of the Grenfell fire and the Dame Judith Hackett report. In particular they will look at what changes will be made to fire safety policies and highlight the issues the FPA has with some of the findings.

In light of the Grenfell tragedy, David Sibert from the Fire Brigade Union will give a presentation on the ‘stay put’ policy and aim to clear up confusion over when it should and shouldn’t be used.

Cladding systems and the BS8414 test will be addressed at 15:00 and Dr. Jim Glockling will examine whether it is fit for purpose with a particular focus on the recent high profile research carried out by the Association of British Insurers.

Tuesday will end with Tim Vincent from Rockwool and his talk on the vital topic of fire stopping as he outlines why it is an economic way of protecting a building.

WEDNESDAY

Following BT Redcare’s daily talk on IP systems, the London Fire Brigade will give a presentation on ‘What to do when a fire safety inspector officer (FSIO) audits your premises.’ With a particular focus on London, the session will give attendees insight into what to expect and provide information to ensure you are prepared, from having the correct documents to being aware of the types of questions they might ask.

The daily Grenfell talk will be given by Jonathan O’Neill OBE, Managing Director of the FPA and will give attendees a unique opportunity to hear from someone involved in the Hackitt report and as well as learn what changes to fire safety will be implemented from it.

After this, there will be a brand new session on lone working to provide information and support for individuals who work alone as fire risk assessors or those who are solely responsible for fire safety in a corporation. The key topic covered will be risk management to ensure that people who undertake those roles are protected.

The ‘Avoiding prosecution’ talk will be given by solicitor Laura Dunseath from law firm Pinsent Masons with a focus on specific cases that will provide tips and hints on how to avoid running into legal trouble.

To conclude Wednesday’s presentations, technical experts at the FPA will give a talk on watermist systems and the industry set standards for them.

THURSDAY

After BT Redcare’s IP systems talk, there will be a session at 11:00 on competency with a particular emphasis on how to achieve this through training, education and third party accreditation.

The last of the 3 Grenfell talks will be given by FPA veteran Howard Passey as he delivers his presentation on Dame Judith Hackett’s report and provides the FPA standpoint.

An expert from the University of Brighton will tackle the topic of evacuation from a fire and terrorism perspective.

Nigel Chantler from the Residential Sprinkler Alliance will take to the stage at 14:00. He will present on the retro fitting of sprinklers in buildings and provide practical advice around the costs associated with implementing them.

Howard Passey will then return to the Infozone stage to give a talk on hot work. Findings from the Hackitt report suggest that these secondary industries need more support and education surrounding safety on sites where hot work is being undertaken.
