WATCH: Western Digital on its new WD Purple 12TB AI drive

From facial recognition to identifying false alarms caused animals, leaves and even light, “we’re getting to the point where movies were 10 years ago” in terms of video surveillance technology.

That’s what Darrin Bulik, director, product marketing, Western Digital, told IFSEC TV in the interview captured in the video below.

Speaking at IFSEC 2018 Bulik also discussed the data storage giant’s newly announced WD Purple 12TB hard drive, which is enabled for up to 16 channels of AI-driven analytics.

Western Digital’s AllFrame AI technology supports the capture of multiple high resolution video streams while retrieving footage to support deep learning analytics.

According to IDC, the amount of big data exabytes generated by surveillance solutions is expected to grow by 25% a year until 2021 – fuelled by soaring resolutions, increasingly complex applications and expanding use of video analytics.

“Network video recording systems are getting smart,” said Brendan Collins, VP for product marketing, devices business unit at Western Digital, upon the new drive’s launch. “AI-enabled NVRs are being architected for new GPUs and CPUs to improve overall deep-learning capability and to speed algorithms related to object recognition and facial recognition.

“NVRs with deep learning require greater storage capacity and more sophisticated processing, versus individual cameras, to perform more advanced analytics, such as location of an individual face image from weeks or months of stored video, or creation of traffic heat maps from hours of retail surveillance video.”
