Global control room market growing as AI and machine learning enhance solution offerings

The control room market “shrugged off” pandemic-induced project delays in 2021, as a new report from market analysts, Omdia, reveals market growth ahead of expectations at 9.6%.

Though pandemic impacts remain with fewer new projects coming to the market, this number is ahead of expectations, according to analysts, with previous predictions expecting growth of 5.7%.

“The control room market has been remarkably resilient through what has been quite a disruptive period for business.

Despite the expectation of global growth slowing a little through 2022 and 2023, the control room market is expected to return gradually to pre-pandemic growth rates. A post-lockdown bounce resulted in delayed 2020 projects being restarted and completed as restrictions were lifted globally.

But, what else is driving growth in the sector?

Analysts highlight that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are being applied to enhance control room offerings from solution providers. AI video threat detection is one area which has improved greatly with the proliferation of ‘AI’ chipsets in the video surveillance market. These chipsets will support AI-powered rules and decision making based around visual classification and meta-data platforms, going forwards.

The control room market is also continuing its transition towards cloud-based solutions, explains Omdia. As these solutions rely heavily on hyperscalers such as Amazon and Microsoft products to run and store data, it is expected this element will become increasingly important, with these platforms are able to influence the capabilities provided by critical applications within control rooms.

Paul Bremner, Principal Analyst, Public Safety & Critical Communications, Omdia, comments:

“What we’ve seen over the last two years is that COVID has acted as a catalyst for change within this industry. We’ve seen the market move faster towards cloud-based solutions. We’ve seen digital transformation coming to the forefront as control rooms had to reimagine ways of working through the pandemic, and as the critical communication industry itself moves to mission critical broadband networks. These networks are bringing new data sources into control rooms and opening a whole new range of possibilities for control rooms.”
