In January 2016, I laid down my tools and moved into sales and design. It was a steep learning curve, but the opportunity to see another side of the industry was fully embraced. I was responsible for Business Development in Scotland, but also looking after a number of Key National Contracts, all of which allowed me to develop an understanding of how a business runs. It gave me perspective on the importance of a good design, and the importance of complying with Industry Standards and CoP when delivering and maintaining system.

In January of 2018, I moved on from Kings Secure Technologies to Marlowe Fire and Security. It was a decision taken to develop my skillset and to gain experience within different market sectors, moving away from high street retail and into Large Projects, Hotel & Leisure and Private Sector businesses.

Previously, my knowledge was predominately based around IP VSS and Access Control Systems, but I found myself becoming more heavily involved with Fire Suppression and Life Safety Systems Design. Marlowe provided with opportunities to see the industry is a different way where before I was protecting premises, now I was protecting lives. Near the end of my time at Marlowe, I was involved with the delivery of multiple Fire CPD’s for M&E Contractors with both Notifier and Gent between Scotland and the North. Which at the time unknowingly lead to where I am today.

Following an unexpected opportunity to enter Education, I now find myself passing on my experience and knowledge to the younger generation of aspiring Engineers. The Education sector has so far allowed me to continue to grow both as a teacher and as a learner with yet another new perspective on industry. I now have the chance to engage with employers and industry bodies in a way I could not before. I can be involved in upskilling existing engineers and inspiring new ones. My goal now is to help educate the Fire and Security Sector as a whole, to bring a higher standard and a new quality to the industry, and to learn as much as I can along the way.
