In a move that will interest security exporters the newly formed Indian government wants to raise the ceiling for foreign direct investment (FDI) in defence from 26% to 100%.
Military expenditure in India has already increased by 231% between 2001 and 2011 to become the largest importer of military goods.
Unsurprisingly, the proposal has been welcomed by defence companies and firms in the surveillance technology space.
Industry experts expect an increasing in partnerships between Indian and non-Indian companies, as foreign companies seek existing infrastructure and expertise in Indian law and customs.
Valued at $500m the Indian commercial security market continues to grow by 30-35% per year. The government is also looking to invest more than $7bn in projects covering urban surveillance, critical infrastructure protection, mass transportation security, maritime security and private security initiatives.
