“If I would be given a chance to start all over again, I would choose network marketing.” Bill Gates
Networking is a critical aspect of any industry, and the security industry is no exception. In fact, says Mark Wall, Managing Director of Wall2Wall Group, it is particularly critical to our sector due to our unique nature.
Here, Mark highlights the importance of in-person networking in the security industry and why he considers it to be invaluable, not only to open doors but also enter opportunities that are vital to business.
It’s crazy to think that just three years ago we had entered a national lockdown. The ideals of networking, events and exhibitions and even the premise of human-to-human interaction was put to a grinding holt for almost two years. Arguably in 2023, we are finally back in full flow on how best to take advantage of one of the most effective tools for professional development.
Embracing technology
For the security industry it is vital to stay up to date with the latest technology and trends. The environment we operate in is constantly evolving and networking provides an effective way to stay up-to-date on these developments.
By attending even the low-key open days to the grand exhibitions, conferences and seminars, we can learn about the latest integration capabilities, cloud and biometrics, and advances in AIOT (artificial intelligence of things) and its ecosystems.
Traditional security systems do not natively include nonvideo-based environment sensors. Yet, at events, we can discuss together the growing demand from end-users for additional sensors to be integrated into cameras and video management systems (VMS) to measure data such as temperature, humidity, smoke, particulates, water and carbon monoxide. Arguably, the divide between building, city, and video management is shrinking and we need to be prepared.
Building relationships
Networking is also important for building relationships with industry experts and peers. By meeting and interacting, we can gain new insights and perspectives and establish vital connections. This can be particularly useful when seeking advice, information, or the finer details of ways to comply with new legislation or referrals.
They say every day is a learning opportunity and through the power of networking, we can expand our knowledge and become more effective and efficient in our work, providing essential security services and peace of mind to our customers.
And we can always learn from each other, as one community. This is something which I believe the UK security industry is particularly strong on.
At the same time as building our contacts, we can access new resources too. Since establishing Wall2Wall Group less than a year ago, I’ve been amazed at the scope of capability our industry can provide.
We really do have security technology that covers the scope of the discerning customer requirements, and it’s a privilege to be able to represent so many systems. I am really looking forward to sharing the resources at upcoming exhibitions.
Exhibitions like IFSEC are crucial to find out the latest developments and generate new business ideas for industry professionals
Finding business
Of course, when it comes down to it, we want to attend an exhibition as a valuable tool for finding new business opportunities. By meeting potential customers, partners or investors, we can establish new relationships that can lead to new business ventures or projects. It’s an opportunity to discuss together in a committed setting the requirements of any given project and what systems and solutions are available.
So, while the world did stop and we did accommodate as best we could with the social media and digital conference tools available to us, nothing can replace the ideals of walking into a crowded room and jumping into a conversation with our peers – both new and existing. After all, we are all there for the same reason.
It’s now time to continue to rebuild our networks. To strengthen relationships with people and causes we care about. To find rooms with topics we want to learn about or discussions we want to contribute to.
It’s time to connect again in real life.
As security professionals, collectively, we have a duty to stay up-to-date on the latest technological advances, legislation and expectations for compliance, tools and techniques and trends. Networking in a dedicated environment provides an effective way to do so.
And I for one am really looking forward to upcoming security exhibitions such as IFSEC as the first time representing Wall2Wall Group.
I hope to see you there!
