Security and Convenience Finally Converge Through ‘Smart Home’ Tech

Historically, security and convenience have not made good bedfellows on the domestic front.

Keys have to be found to lock the front door, doors and windows have to be bolted and alarms need to be set. The greater the security the more inconvenience is suffered by the householder.

But all that is set to change, according to the Door & Hardware Federation. (DHF) whose members are involved in locks, home security, garage doors and residential driveway gates.

Thanks to innovation by its member companies, reliable home security is increasingly becoming available at the touch of a button or a swipe of the smartphone. How convenient is that?

Imagine the scene: the householder is driving home and the powered driveway gates automatically open as he approaches. This can be achieved by a dedicated control fob or even by using an app on his Apple or Android mobile.

Another press of the button and the garage door automatically opens to allow him to drive straight in. At the front door, a push button keypad is used to open the door – no key required! The alarm recognises authorised entry and deactivates automatically.

These ‘smart home’ technologies are available now from a number of DHF member companies. For example, systems are available which combine locks, alarms and CCTV which integrate seamlessly to put the homeowner in complete control of home security with the added bonus of the ultimate in convenience.

There are systems available which combine Bluetooth and WiFi technologies to provide smartphone control to garage door openers, driveway gate openers and motorised window awnings. Smartphone integration can allow the householder to stay connected with his home even when away.

By using a smartphone, he can open and close the garage door for authorised visitors … and even receive an alert direct to his smartphone when the garage door has been shut and secured.

Smart Home technology is developing rapidly. And one key benefit is that, for the first time, a householder can enjoy greater security and convenience without one compromising the other.
