Passive fire protection for Azerbaijan oil refinery plant

[

1600 tons of Fendolite MII passive fire protection, manufactured by Cafco International, has been supplied to ACG (Azeri, Chirag and Gunleshi) Phases I, II & III, at the Sangachal Terminal, Azerbaijan, to provide 2-hour hydrocarbon pool and jet fire resistance at the facility.

In excess of 60,000 square metres of pipe racks, vessel skirts and pre-assembled units have been protected by the Fendolite MII system. The Cafco material was also used on concrete support plinths in the Slug Catcher Area (the term used for the highly flammable area receiving high pressure crude oil from oil platforms at sea) to protect against the risk of explosive spalling of concrete in the event of a fire, as well as the consequent collateral damage to the surrounding pipe work that would ensue.

The Fendolite MII system was recommended by British Petroleum (BP) following its extensive use of the product at Grangemouth Refinery in Scotland, where the material had been applied to a pipe support structure that withstood a directly impinging jet fire of 7-hour duration. The Fendolite MII remained in situ for the entire period to protect the steel support, preventing a massive fire event and ensuing asset losses.

Fendolite MII, a single package factory controlled premix based on vermiculite and Portland cement, is specifically formulated for use on structures and vessels in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. When applied to steel it forms a protective coating able to provide up to 240 minutes fire resistance, and will withstand the effects of real hydrocarbon fires.
