Surat Considers Mandatory Fire Safety Certificates for Buildings Higher than Eight Metres

Surat will soon adopt a new fire policy making it mandatory for all structures above eight metres to obtain a fire safety certificate.

For structures higher than 12 metres, meanwhile, it will be obligatory to install a fire safety system within the premises. Fire safety certificates issued to commercial buildings will have to be renewed every three years whereas for residential buildings the certificates will remain valid for only five years.

“We are discussing a few new provisions in the fire safety policy for the buildings and other structures in the city. The modalities of giving no objection certificate is also being looked into. A final decision will be taken before the announcement of municipal elections,” said standing committee chairman Nirav Shah.

The said amendments have been proposed by a committee comprising Jagdish Patel, Rajesh Desai and Pravin Patel.

Another plan that SMC will be soon rolling-out includes fixing tariff for fire consultants who will be instrumental in ensuring that a building fulfills all pre-requisites before it’s granted a fire safety certificate. Surat has about one lac buildings which are more than 8 metres high.
